ATTENTION: sports/community/city editors/reporters/producers MEDIA ALERT – NHL AND MEDIA PIONEER, KEVIN WEEKES LEADS BLACK HISTORY MONTH ASSEMBLIES AT LOCAL SCHOOLS ON WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 2010 Toronto, February 8, 2010 What: Former NHL goaltender and CBC’s Hockey Night In Canada, Kevin Weekes will inspire students with his story to commemorate Black History Month. Who: With a 12 year NHL career, in September of 2009, Kevin Weekes made history when he became television’s first black hockey analyst. Weekes joined CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada, covering western games, as well as becoming co-host of CBC’s After Hours. Weekes can also be seen on the NHL Network as an analyst on its nightly flagship program, NHL On The Fly. The Toronto native is not only a pioneer in the sports and broadcasting world, he has also inspired the lives of many young people in Toronto, New York and Barbados through his various charitable initiatives. Weekes’ inspirational story has been featured in several publications, including: Jet magazine, Vibe Magazine, The Toronto Star, The Toronto Sun, CBC’s The Fifth Estate and Sports Illustrated. Weekes has also appeared on One Life to Live, All My Children, The View and Everybody Hates Chris.
